What Are Dental Crowns?

Posted on 9/19/2022 by Dr. Anthony Hoffman
What Are Dental Crowns?Damaged teeth do not have to affect your chewing ability or prevent you from having award-winning confidence. Dental crowns are good solutions to restoring a beautiful smile and the functionality of the teeth. A crown is a tooth-like cap placed over the damaged tooth to restore its appearance, size, shape, and functionality. This cap is made of long-lasting materials that can withstand the trauma of food grinding or chewing. With proper care, regular dental exams, and cleaning, crowns can last up to 15 years.

Reasons Why y You May Need a Dental Crown

A dental crown is part of the restorative treatment. Some issues such as enamel or structural damage can make the tooth sensitive to heat or cold. Once the dentist addresses the problems with either filling, root canal, or dental implant, protecting the tooth with a dental crown will prevent further damage and sensitivity.

Your dentist can also recommend a dental crown to protect a weak tooth from breaking. If you have a worn-down tooth or discolored teeth, dental crowns are good solutions. Having a dental crown treatment usually requires two dental visits:

Examination

Tooth examination is the first stage of dental crown preparation. It involves performing X-rays to check the condition of the tooth. If the tooth has injury or decay to the tooth's pulp, the dentist might recommend a root canal treatment to remove the infected part. Tooth reshaping is then done to make room for the crown.

After reshaping, the dentist makes impressions to make an exact model of your tooth. While the permanent crown is prepared, your specialist will create a temporary crown to cover and protect the tooth.

Receiving the Crown

During this stage, the dentist removes the temporary crown and tests to see if the permanent one fits correctly. He then anesthetizes the patient's tooth when cementing the permanent crown.

Do you wish to have white teeth? Or do you want to balance your bite? A dental crown is a good solution to many dental issues. It helps to align the teeth, making it easy to chew and bite. Besides, the dentist uses ceramic and porcelain to create the crown. These materials are stain-resistant. Thus, you will enjoy white teeth as you age.
