It's that time of year again: school is starting up, and parents are busy getting their kids ready. So along with new clothes, backpacks, and school supplies, don't forget to add dental care to your list! Here are some tips we have found helpful to make sure your child has a healthy smile this school year:
Back to School Dental Check-Up
It's essential to schedule a dental check-up before heading back to school. Bring your child in for an exam and cleaning, even if it has been six months since their last appointment. If they need any fillings or other work done on their teeth (for example, braces), be sure you take care of that as well!
Brush Up On Dental Hygiene Habits
The best way to keep children's teeth healthy is by teaching them good brushing habits at the youngest age possible: Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and make sure they brush all areas of their mouth - including behind-the-back molars where food can easily get trapped. They should also floss once per day! It may help set a timer while they brush to feel like less of a chore.
Back to School with Braces
If your child is returning to school with braces, you must keep their teeth clean while wearing the braces. Sticky food like taffy and gum can get stuck in between the brackets of metal on your child's teeth - which means more trips to the orthodontist!
Snacks for Healthy Teeth
Snacking on crunchy fruits and veggies like apples, carrots, celery, or nuts can help keep your child's teeth healthy. These foods also provide fiber which helps promote a healthy digestive system! Try and substitute sugary snacks like candy bars or cookies for healthier options whenever possible.
Drink Up!
Water is the best drink for healthy teeth and gums (as well as the rest of your body). Avoid drinks with high sugar content, like juice boxes or sports drinks. Sipping on water throughout the day will help keep your child's mouth hydrated and their teeth clean.
Follow these tips for a healthy and happy school year - both mentally and physically! By taking care of your child's teeth, you're setting them up for a lifetime of good oral health. So have a great school year! For more information, questions reach out to us and we'll to assist in any way we can.
