Procedures You Might Need Before Getting Dental Implants

Posted on 1/1/2026 by Dr. Anthony Hoffman
X-ray image of bone grafting. Thinking about dental implants? That's fantastic! They're a really great option for replacing missing teeth and giving you back a confident smile and the ability to eat comfortably. But sometimes, there's a little groundwork that needs to be done before those implants can be placed successfully. It's like prepping a garden before planting beautiful flowers – we need to make sure the foundation is strong and healthy first. Let's talk about some of those potential preliminary procedures.

Bone Grafting: Building a Strong Foundation

One of the most common things we look at is the amount of bone in your jaw. Dental implants need a good, solid base of bone to fuse with – this is how they become so strong and stable. If you've been missing teeth for a while, or if you've experienced bone loss due to gum disease, there might not be enough bone left to properly support an implant.

That's where bone grafting comes in. It's a procedure where we add bone material to your jaw to increase its volume and density. This bone can come from different sources – sometimes it's from your own body, sometimes it's from a donor, and sometimes it's synthetic. The type of graft that’s best for you will depend on your individual situation. Over time, your body will integrate the graft with your existing bone, creating a strong and stable foundation for your dental implants. Think of it like reinforcing the foundation of a house before building an addition.

Sinus Lift: Making Room for Implants

Another area that can sometimes require attention is the upper back teeth area. Above your upper teeth are sinuses – air-filled spaces in your skull. Sometimes, when upper back teeth are missing, the sinus cavity can expand downward, leaving less bone available for placing dental implants.

A sinus lift, also called a sinus augmentation, is a procedure that gently lifts the sinus membrane upward and places bone grafting material in the space created. This increases the amount of bone available for the dental implants to be anchored to. It's like raising the ceiling in a room to make more space.

Ridge Augmentation: Reshaping the Jaw

Sometimes, the shape of the jawbone itself needs a little help. If a tooth has been missing for a long time, the jawbone in that area can shrink or become uneven, resulting in a ridge that isn't ideal for dental implants.

Ridge augmentation is a procedure that reshapes and rebuilds the jawbone to create a more even and stable ridge. This can involve adding bone grafting material to fill in any defects and create a smooth surface for the implants. This helps ensure the implants are placed in the optimal position for both function and aesthetics.

Tooth Extractions: Clearing the Way

Occasionally, a tooth that's badly damaged or infected needs to be removed before dental implants can be placed. In these cases, we'll perform a tooth extraction. Sometimes, a socket preservation graft will be placed at the time of extraction to preserve the bone for future dental implant placement.

Addressing Gum Disease: A Healthy Environment

It's absolutely crucial to have healthy gums before getting dental implants. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, can damage the bone and tissues that support your teeth and, eventually, your implants. If you have gum disease, we'll need to treat it thoroughly before proceeding with dental implant placement. This might involve scaling and root planing (a deep cleaning) or, in more severe cases, gum surgery. Think of it like weeding a garden before planting new seeds – we need to get rid of the unhealthy stuff first!

These are just some of the procedures that might be needed before you can get dental implants. Everyone's situation is different, so the best way to find out what's right for you is to schedule a consultation with your dentist. They can evaluate your oral health, discuss your options, and create a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve a healthy, beautiful smile with dental implants.
