My Tooth Hurts and the Dentist Office Is Closed

Posted on 8/15/2025 by Dr. Anthony Hoffman
Man with jaw and mouth pain.
We've all been there: a sharp, throbbing pain in your tooth, and the dentist's office is closed. Whether it's the weekend, a holiday, or just after hours, a toothache can be a real nuisance. But don't worry, there are things you can do to manage the pain until you can see a dentist.

First Aid for Toothaches

First, try to identify the source of the pain. Is it localized to one tooth, or is it more general? Is it constant, or does it come and go? Once you have a better understanding of the pain, you can take steps to alleviate it.

Here are some first-aid tips for toothaches:
•  Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. This can help to dislodge any food or debris that may be irritating the tooth.
•  Apply a cold compress to the cheek. This can help to reduce inflammation and pain.
•  Take over-the-counter pain medication. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help to reduce pain and inflammation.
•  Avoid irritating the tooth. Don't chew on the affected side of your mouth, and avoid hot or cold foods and drinks.

When to See a Dentist

If the pain is severe, or if it doesn't improve within a few hours, it's important to see a dentist as soon as possible. There are a number of potential causes of toothaches, and some of them can be serious.

Some signs that you need to see a dentist right away include:
•  Severe pain that doesn't improve with over-the-counter medication
•  Swelling in the face or mouth
•  Fever
•  Difficulty swallowing
•  Bleeding from the gums

Preventing Toothaches

The best way to deal with toothaches is to prevent them from happening in the first place. Here are some tips for good oral care:
•  Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
•  Floss daily to remove plaque and food debris.
•  See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.
•  Avoid sugary foods and drinks.
•  Wear a mouthguard if you play sports.

By following these tips, you can keep your teeth healthy and avoid painful toothaches.

Restoration Dentistry

If you do experience a toothache, don't despair. Restoration dentistry offers a variety of treatments to repair damaged teeth and relieve pain. Depending on the severity of the problem, your dentist may recommend a filling, crown, or even a root canal.

With proper care, your teeth can last a lifetime. So be sure to take care of them and see your dentist regularly.
