Treating Dry Socket At Home

Posted on 1/15/2025 by Office - Dr. Anthony Hoffman
Woman touches her cheek, where there could be a potential dry socket. Dry socket is a painful condition that can occur after a tooth extraction. It happens when the blood clot that normally forms in the empty socket is dislodged, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. This can cause throbbing pain, bad breath, and a foul taste in the mouth.

While dry socket isn't dangerous, it can be very uncomfortable. Here are some things you can do at home to help relieve the pain and promote healing:

Rinse with Salt Water

Rinse your mouth with a warm salt water solution several times a day. The salt water will help to clean the socket and keep it free of debris. To make a salt water solution, dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water.

Apply a Cold Compress

Apply a cold compress to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day. The cold will help to reduce inflammation and pain.

Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help relieve the pain. Be sure to follow the directions on the label.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking and alcohol can delay healing and increase the risk of infection. It's best to avoid them altogether until your dry socket has healed.

See Your Dentist

If the pain is severe or doesn't improve after a few days, see your dentist. They may need to prescribe stronger pain medication or perform a procedure to clean the socket and promote healing.

How to Prevent Dry Socket

There are a few things you can do to help prevent dry socket after a tooth extraction:
•  Follow your dentist's instructions carefully.
•  Avoid using straws or spitting for the first few days after the extraction.
•  Don't smoke or drink alcohol.
•  Eat soft foods and avoid hard, chewy foods.
•  Keep your mouth clean by brushing and flossing regularly.

Dry socket can be a painful experience, but with proper care, it will usually heal within a week or two. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to talk to your dentist.
