My Mom Will Not Wear Dentures!

However, you may be confused when, after a couple of days of wearing them, your mom takes them off and puts them in their case. If your mom refuses to wear dentures, chances are she has a good reason. Here are some indications of why your mom may be having trouble with her dentures.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic teeth set on a base. Most are made of acrylic, plastic, or porcelain. Each set of dentures is different and specially designed for the mouth of each person. Dentures are for people who have lost all or part of their teeth in either their top or bottom jaws. Dentures either stay in place on top of the gums through suction or by using a dental adhesive. Many people wear dentures to look like they have healthy teeth and also to eat their favorite foods they miss.

What May Be Bothering Your Mom

While dentures aim to mimic natural teeth, they may be a problem for a few weeks until the person gets used to them. For example, if your mom had teeth that were knocked out due to trauma or if she had her final few teeth removed, her dentures may not fit properly. Without a proper fit, the base of the dentures may be rubbing against her gum line, which could leave her with painful blisters or raw areas in her mouth.

Also, wearing dentures takes getting used to because you have to adjust to moving your mouth a bit differently. Your mom will chew her food differently, and her speech may sound different as well. Many people who wear dentures describe the first few weeks of wearing them as slippery and speaking as sounding mushy.

If you want your mom to continue to wear her dentures, you need to bring her to see our dentist. Sometimes, dentists can make a couple of minor adjustments to the dentures to make sure they fit well and are easy to wear. Why not reach out today to make your mom an appointment?
