Can I Use the Same Floss Twice?

A close up of a person flossing their teethWe are all trying to save money these days because the inflation rate is so incredibly high. Even basic necessities, such as eggs and milk, are priced extravagantly! If you are looking to cut corners wherever you can, you may be tempted to reuse your dental floss. However, reusing your old dental floss may cost you more money than you save in the long run.

Why You Should Not Skip Flossing

While brushing your teeth each day is great, you also need to be sure you are flossing. Flossing is vitally important to the health of your teeth and gums. Flossing has a couple of advantages for your dental health. First, by flossing between your teeth, you are getting rid of any plaque and food particles trapped between your teeth that can cause bacterial growth and lead to cavities and gum disease. Second, flossing stimulates your gums and helps to keep them healthy. Our dentists agree that flossing after meals is just as important as brushing.

Using the Same Floss?

Just because you can use the same floss more than once does not mean you should. First, reusing your floss may reintroduce bacteria into your mouth that you got rid of when you flossed. Not only can this bacteria harm your teeth and gums, but the floss can also contain viruses, such as the cold virus, that will make you sick. Second, both string floss and flossers are only meant to be used one time. Both can lose their effectiveness over time, and they may even cut your tender gums, which is not only painful but can cause bleeding and infection.

If the thought of buying flossers or string floss all of the time just to use it once is physically painful, you may want to try a different type of flosser. There are flossers that use water rather than string to floss your teeth. They cost a little more initially but can save you a lot of money.

Are you unsure what to do about flossing or need help with your flossing technique? We can help. Call Hoffman Dental at (503) 648-7700 today to schedule your appointment!
