What's The Difference Between An Overbite And A Crossbite?

Posted on 8/7/2023 by Evan
What's The Difference Between An Overbite And A Crossbite?Malocclusions, or bite issues, are common in children as well as adults. Whether you are looking to have your bite corrected as an adult or whether you are thinking about how to correct your child's bite issues, you need to understand the differences between the two most common types of malocclusions: overbites and crossbites. You need to understand both types of bite issues and how orthodontists treat them. If you don't have malocclusions treated, they can lead to both jaw joint issues and issues with your dental hygiene.

What Is an Overbite?

If you have an overbite, your top teeth are either too far in front of your bottom teeth or they come down too far over your bottom teeth. Overbites are the most common form of malocclusion. Many adults have a slight overbite, which may not need to be treated. However, a severe overbite needs corrective treatment. You may have an overbite because of genetics, thumb sucking, or pacifier use. Some people develop overbites later due to bruxism or tooth clenching or grinding.

People with moderate or severe overbites can receive treatment from an orthodontist to correct their bites. You may be able to get clear aligners, such as Invisalign, to correct your overbite. Severe cases of overbite usually require braces.

What Is a Crossbite?

Crossbites are a form of malocclusion where the top and bottom teeth don't match up when you bite down. Some crossbites are so severe there is a large gap in the front of your mouth between your upper and lower teeth, which is called an open bite. Like overbites, crossbites may be genetic. Many children suffer from crossbites because they suck their thumbs, bottles, or pacifiers past the age of three. Crossbites are usually more complicated to treat than an overbite. Your orthodontist may need to widen your jaw through an expander before you receive other treatments, such as braces. With crossbites, braces are almost always necessary.
