Are my Teeth Rotting or Just Stained

Posted on 5/22/2023 by Evan
Are my Teeth Rotting or Just StainedThese are two distinct dental conditions: rotting teeth and stained teeth. Stained teeth result from the build-up of pigments from food, drinks, tobacco, and other substances. Teeth whitening and other procedures can be used to remove these stains. On the other hand, decay, and cavities brought on by germs can result in rotting teeth. If left untreated, this can result in dental sensitivity, discomfort, and tooth loss. While discolored teeth are mostly just a cosmetic issue, rotten teeth need immediate dental care to stop additional decay and maintain oral health. However, it is essential to consult your dentist since discoloration can signify cavity formation.

Difference between Stained Teeth and Rotting Teeth

Rotting teeth are a dental problem caused when bacteria cause acid that erodes the tooth enamel. Tooth decay can be caused by poor oral hygiene, intake of sugary and acidic foods and drinks, and lack of fluoride. Discolored teeth, on the hand, are caused when pigments from foods, beverages like sodas and coffee, and tobacco products accumulate on the teeth's surface, causing yellow, brown, gray, or black discoloration of teeth.

Symptoms of Rotting Teeth

When teeth start to decay, they can cause many uncomfortable symptoms. Tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods can indicate tooth decay. Toothache, both persistent and intermittent, may suggest that the deterioration has reached the inner part of the tooth or the nerve. Visible holes or pits in the teeth can be a visible sign of decay, while bad breath could be caused by the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Tooth discoloration may also occur as the decay advances. Severe stages of tooth decay can lead to swelling or pus around the affected tooth, indicating an infection that requires immediate dental attention. Additionally, the decay can cause the tooth to loosen or shift if it affects the tooth structure, which may require extraction or other dental procedures.

Symptoms of Tooth Discoloration

Tooth discoloration does not have as many symptoms as tooth decay. It manifests in the change of color of teeth. The natural color of teeth is white or off-white, while tooth staining might present itself in yellow, brown, or black. Additionally, the discoloration may appear as white spots or streaks in rare cases. Besides the visual aspect, tooth discoloration can cause other symptoms like increased sensitivity, particularly when exposed to hot or cold temperatures. However, where such symptoms present themselves, consult your dentist.
