Some Causes of Oral and Dental Diseases

Posted on 11/7/2022 by Dr. Anthony Hoffman
Some Causes of Oral and Dental DiseasesOral health means being secure from facial and oral pains with tooth loss or decay. One of the most common oral diseases is tooth decay, also known as cavities. The disease affects the gums and teeth. The highest population affected by tooth decay is school-going children. Adults in middle age are also affected by severe periodontal illnesses that eventually lead to teeth loss. Learn about some habits that can cause dental diseases.

Poor Diet Causes Of Dental Diseases

Sugar found in most food is what leads to many periodontal diseases and tooth decay. The acid effect that is produced during the tooth decay process usually destroys the top layer of the teeth, known as the enamel. Another cause of tooth illnesses and decay is some medicines intake that causes dry mouth. Also, patients who suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular illnesses could suffer from oral diseases.

Chronic Dry Mouth

Luckily, the mouth has a natural defense line for demineralization. When saliva is produced in the mouth, it enhances frequent reverses of the possible damage through mineralization. Some minerals found in the mouth include phosphate and calcium. Also, drinking water and using fluoride toothpaste helps the enamel repair itself when it replaces the lost minerals after an acid attack.

Tobbacco or Smoking

Smoking pipes, cigarettes, or chewing tobacco uplifts the risk of gum diseases. Periodontitis is one of the most common gum diseases caused by such habits. Smokers have an increased chance of suffering from gum diseases than nonsmokers. Hence, to reduce the risk, you can gradually reduce your smoking habits as you practice good oral hygiene. For example, if you are used to using two cigarettes per day, start taking one, and soon you could become a nonsmoker.
